Artist Bio:

A string of buzzmaking, near-mythical live shows across the Northeast began after a serendipitous meeting in 1996 brought together the current lineup of New York Capitol Region rockers Super 400. Guitarist Kenny Hohman and his longtime friend and drummer Joe Daley formed the band in the early 1990s, living, writing and gigging in both Brooklyn and Woodstock, before returning to Albany to find a permanent bassist. The addition of Lori Friday on bass rounded out the thundering power trio's sound, and their penchant for writing hook-laden rock and roll songs, along with a gift for conjuring epic, seat-of-the-trousers jams, eventually caught the attention of Geoff Travis from Trade 2/Island Records. In '98, Island released the band's self-titled debut, which the band had recorded for the Albany-based Cacophone label earlier that year. The band began making plans to tour and promote the album, with Island's support. Less than two months after the record's release, Island's parent company Polygram was bought by Seagram's Co., and Super 400, along with most of the label's other lesser-known artists, was dropped from the roster. Despite its short shelf life, the album was a critical success for the band. Over the next few years, the three shared songwriting duties, penning and performing several albums worth of new material. They've continued to hone their musical chops both as Super 400 and in a variety of combinations, often including other musicians, playing frequent live gigs and doing session and support work around the Northeast and United Kingdom. In the summer of 2002 the band began unveiling their latest crop of original songs which will make up the heart and soul of the next studio release. Super 400 has caught their second wind, performing at festivals and sharing the stage with (former Black Crowe) Marc Ford & the Sinners, the Screamin' Cheetah Wheelies, Derek Trucks, and Royston Langdon (formerly of Spacehog). A string of stellar, two-set headlining dates at the top live music venues in and around their home town has cemented their reputation as a lethal live act. Every show is one-of-a-kind, and thanks to the band's taper-friendliness, recordings of their roof-shaking live performances are being traded widely at live shows and on the web. The Sups incendiary live gigs are a must-see. A new setlist every night draws from nearly 50 originals spiced with covers from Nick Drake to Howlin' Wolf to the Meters. Though they've been tagged with a "70s rockers" label, they artfully blend the spirit of classic rock with melodic, contemporary hard-rock sensibilities and a dash of soul and R&B. While the band's skillful improvisations may at any moment erupt into unexplored themes and territories, a "Jam Band" they are not. By interspersing infectious, 3-minute pop songs, soulful ballads, and nasty, crunchy interludes, they've forged a sound authentically their own. The band has completed the recording for their new album with the help of producer Jack Daley, master sessionist and Lenny Kravitz bassist. Special guest George Laks (Peaceful Knievel, Chris Robinson's New Earth Mud, Joan Osborne), has lent his groovy keyboard stylings to the release as well. Super 400 will be seeking out a new label partnership in the coming months, while continuing a full schedule of live appearances. Perhaps most importantly, Joe, Kenny and Lori are genuinely close friends. They currently reside in upstate New York, and they have a fondness for one another that extends far beyond their chosen vocations.
